Once again, Irish Eyes in Milton, Delaware, is sponsoring the 3rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 14th, 2010. The parade participants and the street crowds grow every year and everyone has a great time. I am part Irish (Kathleen) and so is my husband Bill. We’ll have to put together our decorations for the van this year and get ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style. Everyone is Irish at least once a year! Look for us in the Gotcha Covered van – “We’re Irish and we’ve always been Green,” is our theme.
Boomers are becoming a great source of new volunteers for organizations of all kinds. Certainly services like Meals on Wheels depend heavily on new retirees that finally have time to help those less fortunate. I’ve been very impressed with the retired couples I’ve met that deliver meals on a daily basis to the elderly throughout Sussex County.
But arts organizations also benefit from the new volunteers, some of whom discover new talents they never had time to pursue until they retired. In Milton, for example, The Milton Theater offers opportunities to help run this restored theater in the heart of town. That could mean helping to put on performances, working behind the curtain or even auditioning for one of the plays! They also need help with tickets sales and manning the refreshment stand.
Become a docent at The Milton Historical Society, learn about the town’s history and share it with others!
These are just two ways you can become part of the town of Milton, meet new people and have a great time.
The Milton Historical Society is a great source of information on all things Milton, including its early years as a major Shipbuilding town. At the society’s web site, you’ll find a narrated slideshow that I found very interesting. Milton has survived the demise of the shipbuilding industry, two fires that destroyed much of the downtown in the early 1900s and a major flood. Much of the town has now been restored and the historic architecture is one of the town’s main attractions today.

On Sunday, February 7th, between 12 noon and 5 pm, Salon Milton will hold its annual benefit for the Milton Historical Society. Last year I had great fun filming the day’s events with my Flip Video camera. It was one of my first and you can watch that video here Fun Fundraising in Milton!.
Salon Milton, located at 517 Chestnut Street in Milton, marks its fourth year of operation on the same day and it promises to be a fun event. The salon offers hair cuts, manicures and a bake sale – all to benefit the Milton Historical Society. Casa San Francisco benefits all winter long from canned food that you drop off at the salon.
To schedule yourself for a hair-cut or manicure please call ahead at 302-684-1880.
This property is finally priced properly if you have the desire to buy a historic property in the heart of Milton with a fabulous waterview of Wagamon’s Pond. Bill and I have looked at it several times and trust me – it will be a project. It is now on the market for $154,900 and it will take a lot more than that to turn it into a charming home you can actually live in. (Click here to see the Listing.) We should know. We bought a historic home in Milton back in 2005 for around that amount, gutted it, rebuilt it, added onto it – turned it into a new historic home that we did live in until this past July. That house sold for $385,000 and frankly should have sold for closer to $425,000.
Bill, of course, is a licensed remodeling contractor and this is the kind of work Gotcha Covered! does on a daily basis. So, if you’re interested in turning this home back into the fabulous property it once was – or could be, now is the time. Call us now and let’s go take a look – the bank is entertaining offers before the property goes to Auction on January 17th.

It’s that time of year again! Antiques in Milton, my favorite antique shop on Union Street has put together the 2nd Annual Antique Show to benefit the Milton Historical Society. Last year, I found some wonderful items including an ornament tree that will come out again for the holidays.
This show is just one of the reasons Autumn is my favorite time of year in Coastal Delaware. Look for the show right next to the Lydia Cannon Museum, 210 Union Street, Milton, Delaware.
