When I first heard about the 1st Annual Downstate Delaware Dirty Dozen Mud Run I thought they were just kidding! Then today I saw the long list of registered teams and participants ready for the fun on Saturday, April 16th, at 9 am at The Shamrock Farm in Milton, Delaware. Each team is made up of 3 people, men, women or co-ed, with names like the “Three Stooges”, “The Victorious Secrets”, the “Dirty Blondes” and “The Muddy Ducts”. Registration maxed out at 120 teams!

Matt Carter, the owner of Quest Fitness in Lewes, my gym, and Tim Bamforth of Seashore Striders are always coming up with great new ideas to foster fitness while having a great time.

Milton, Delaware, is a small historic town known for it’s past as a shipbuilding town and it’s location at the head of the Broadkill River. Increasingly, Milton is becoming best known as the headquarters of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, founded by Sam Caliglione. Dogfish is the nation’s fastest growing brewery and thanks to Brew Masters, the new series hosted by Sam  on The Discovery Channel, more “off-centered” people are discovering the town of Milton. On any given day, hundreds of people visit Milton for one reason – beer tasting at the Dogfish Brewery. It’s the hottest ticket in town and brings in more visitors to the town than any other business or event.

One of my clients just told me how much she enjoys the McCabe Preserve right here in Milton, Delaware. It made me realize that I sometimes learn more about all the great things to do from newcomers than I do from the locals. Maybe that’s because, in retirement, they take the time to explore and discover all that the DelMarVa Peninsula has to offer.

Spectacular in its own right, the Edward H. McCabe Preserve features a wide range of habitats, plants and animals within a relatively small pocket of the Delmarva Peninsula. While a roadside parking area provides access to hiking trails located on the preserve, arriving by canoe is the way to go for adventurous visitors. From two miles away in the historic town of Milton, explorers can put in their canoes and meander down the Broadkill River before heading ashore. Whether arriving by land or by river, visitors have the opportunity to really escape into a natural environment that gives true meaning to the word “preserve.”
